The widow of a teacher shot by a 13-year-old student sued the distributor of the gun, claiming it was negligent in selling the "cheap" handgun. The student obtained the weapon by stealing it from his grandfather.
The widow, Pam Grunow, actually won the case in November 2002 and was awarded $1.2 million by the jury. But in a stunning show of good sense, the trial judge set aside the verdict and Grunow appealed.
We certainly sympathize with Grunow and recognize the tragedy of the events that transpired. However, it was Brazill, his grandfather, and perhaps the school that were liable, not Valor.
